Freedom of Sleep is an interdisciplinary exhibition that explores the desynchronisation between our bodies and society, through a rich program including a listening and performance space, a conference and an editorial platform.

The project aims to explore the night time, and insomnia, as a form of dissent, slow transformation, awakening and action. In a society that blinds us by continuous 24 hours work, this exhibition reflects upon the desynchronisation of the body through our norms and ideas of productivity, efficiency, attention, distraction, vigilance and free time, as well as inertia, and movements of rising and collapsing.

This exhibition aims to flip insomnia around by reinvesting in the night and its activities, and reconsidering the porosity between our bodies, rhythms and societies through art practices that emphasises listening whether visual, sonic or performative.

Amosphère : 7 remedies for melancholia

Sessions are 15 min, please book via this link.

The artist Amosphere offers 7 individual sound sessions of exclusive, individualized and unpublished activation of her work Gathering the light, in the exhibition Freedom of Sleep.

Gathering the Light is a sound installation inspired by Shangqing meditation based on Taoism. The sound piece is visualised through a three-dimensional device composed of its musical score. It is devised to be listened to inside its environment. The piece attempts to merge thought and non-thought, to make the subject-object duality disappear through its minimalism in order to orient one’s consciousness inward and free the mind from all anxiety and negativity by experiencing contentment.

STATION 19 - La nuit.

The Night. From sleepless nights to waking dreams: a subversive space-time?

Brain Space Laboratory brings together artists and researchers to share their explorations of the vital co-existential bonds connecting beings together. Brain Space Laboratory draws upon artistic experimentations and privileges intuition as a driving force, shared imaginaries as a foundation and collective intelligence as a working method.

Asleep at night, awake during the day: this cycle seems to be marking most of human existences. However, as Anabelle Lacroix's curatorial project Freedom of Sleep takes notes, the border between day and night, wakefulness and sleep, is porous, and its porosities are numerous and culturally defined. In days like ours, when sleeping hours are counted, reduced by the production imperative, by the rampant anxiety of our exhausted societies, as well as by the growing disappearance of darkness, it seems necessary to ask ourselves: how to inhabit night time? Which subversive spaces are we left with, real or fantasized?

As daylight hollows the night out, exhausting every second of our lives paradoxically drives us to insomnia, makes us incapable of accessing moments of release. If there should be a right to sleep, we could yet consider night time a living alternative: a way to reclaim our weariness in order to rethink normalised paces. This Station 19 entitled The Night. From sleepless nights to waking dreams: a subversive space-time? will thus focus on the cacophonous desynchronisation between bodies and their environment. It is an invitation to shift perspectives by paying attention to the multiplicity of awake/asleep cycles which compose our cosmomorphic world as well as an invitation to realign ourselves by listening carefully to our unique biological clocks. Station 19 envisions sleeplessness and night-time as spaces for substantial, political and personal, anti-productive and sub-optimal struggles.

Night-time is a fertile ground where different states of consciousness coexist. In Apitchapong Weerasethakul's cinema, on display at Villeurbanne's Contemporary Art Institute from June 2021 to September 2021, darkness is loaded with a dreamlike, political and metamorphic quality. Night-time becomes the place where bodies, elements and temporalities transform each other and collide and where other ghostly and non-human intensities arise.

the Initiative for Practices and Visions of Radical Care proposes an (extra) sensorial approach revolving around dreams and dreaming as a space of regeneration in which harmful and toxic connections can be healed. This intervention into the physical and imaginary spaces of the Freedom of Sleep's exhibition display will combine objects, voices, dreams, performative elements and meditative and ritualistic moments. These interdependencies between human and non-human matter, subjectivities and sensibilities, resiliences and fragilities, forces and fatigues will be at the heart of our exchanges. In resonance with the Initiative's aim to create caring structures and instigate mutual support within the art system, this proposal will deploy in particular the energies of cure, dreaming, transFORMaction and harmonisation - these states and activities that enable precisely such spaces and mutualities.

Introduced by Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez and Elena Sorokina, this session will present the Initiative that researches and supports artistic practices that tackle the question of relationships of care, solidarity and inclusiveness.

One night

One night

Be My Ghost de Méryll Ampe, Blanche Lafuente et Violaine Lochu

One Night by Méryll Ampe

Méryll Ampe explores the architecture of spaces through sound materials and textures which are created, or come from reappropriation of residues from experiments carried out over the course of several years. The artist will present a new immersive sound installation (with a performative component), which, through the use of low frequencies, will evoke different states of consciousness and apprehension of the body, such as those we experience during insomnia. Through listening and sound, the artist brings to the fore our environments and our mental and interior spaces, simultaneously.

Be my ghost, Méryll Ampe, Blanche Lafuente and Violaine Lochu

The artists will present Be my ghost, a new work in collaboration with Blanche Lafuente and Violaine Lochu which is between a concert, a performance and cabaret. The artists draw freely from their own musical universe, and other fields - visual arts, sculpture, dance, sound poetry ... Be my ghost questions the notion of categories, formal and conceptual. The biases (entanglement of artistic approaches and genres, shifting of roles and assignments - of the character-entity, of the protagonists of the trio, of the public, etc.), orient the project towards a hybrid form nourished by numerous references, such as A Cyborg Manifesto (1984) by Donna Haraway, which challenges the dualisms of modern thought in favor of an open multiplicity.

Critical Techno by Helena Dietrich and Thomas Proksch

Helena Dietrich presents Critical techno, in collaboration with Thomas Proksch (musician and DJ working in Berlin). A conference-performance or meditative dance in the form of a trance, it is a two-hour collective journey between listening, dancing, words, beats, sweat and bodies sailing towards an unknown but poetically powerful destination. The artist has created a tide of voices and sounds through a somatic score. Listening becomes an experience with a desire to give voice to the theories of queer writers, feminist and occult writers to techno music. Can dance parties become moments of collective reflection? How can we use joy and natural euphoria as a catalyst for our understanding of the world?

One day

Video Documentation

One day

Universe Memory by Joon Yoo

Joon Yoo will present a new performance work, linked her series titled Universe Memory, a multifaceted project that also includes an artist edition and etchings. With the creation of an instrument and performance Joon Yoo offers a physical interpretation of the societal rhythm that imposes itself on our consciousnesses and our bodies, an embodiment of a permanent movement, or the inevitable putting into action of our bodies with a humanist reflection on the passage of time.

unnamed piece by Masi Tiitta and Anna Torkkel

Masi Tiitta and Anna Torkkel will present a choreographic work titled unnamed piece (2016). In the piece, the action of rising up is stretched to a durational event. Whilst rhythm, movement and speed are central themes of the exhibition, the work further articulates a reflection upon the feeling of one's own weight and the deliberate movement of one’s own body. In the piece fatigue as a bodily condition enters into a dynamic of choice—or refusal—of daytime activities, and the right to inactivity.

This work received the support of Arts Promotion Centre Finland, Institut finlandais and TelepART Mobility Support Platform, Regional Dance Centre of Western Finland.

Batailles Nocturnes by Johanna Rocard, with Mahé Cabel

Johanna Rocard will present Batailles Nocturnes, a new creation combining installation, costumes and performance in collaboration with Mahé Cabel. This work is a hybrid ritual, at the crossroads of the dancefloor and the performative reading. It articulates a reflection on the role of non-institutional dances in times of crisis, and the survival of pre-capitalist rituals to ward off bad luck. While today night dancing is a forbidden domain, this project creates an anachronistic dialogue between Carlo Ginzburg's text Batailles Nocturnes and a corpus of resistant dances, real or dreamlike and contemporary.

Darkness and illumination: a conversation with artists Katja Aglert and Alona Rodeh

Darkness and illumination: a conversation with artists Katja Aglert and Alona Rodeh

This online talk takes place as part of the exhibition Freedom of Sleep at Fondation Fiminco. Curator Anabelle Lacroix will be in conversation with Katja Aglert and Alona Rodeh to discuss ideas of darkness, illumination and penumbra in their new works conceived for the exhibition.

Zoom link: https://NewSchool.zoom.us/j/92083848508

Katja Aglert will present Penumbra Tales, a sound-based installation and Alona Rodeh will discuss her work The New Moon in the Old Moon's Arms, an installation and performance-visit focusing on the effect of lighting and the industrial heritage of the pharmaceutical site at Fondation Fiminco.

Katja Aglert

The penumbra, in latin meaning ‘almost shadow’, carries an ambivalence that could be understood as ‘an area that lies on the edge of something’. In astrology it means a partially illuminated shadow, like the luminous crescent during an eclipse. In Penumbra Tales Katja Aglert explores diverse imaginaries of penumbra relations, connected to some of the themes that she has been working with for many years. Darkness as performative matter is explored as a potential for vision and sensorial perception, and for something in becoming (without an end). With storytelling through more-than-human encounters, the artist explores how the sensorial can create new imaginaries, beyond the centralities of the human. The penumbra being a liminal subject matter, it relates to the artist’s long-term exploration of possibilities for art to materialise ideas beyond the static concept of a world categorically divided by pre-existing boundaries.

Katja Aglert often works on long-term research-based investigations situated within feminist, more-than-human imaginaries, and ecology related inquires. She aims for a dialogical process in an effort to establish a participative transformation as part of the artistic process. Katja Aglert is a Swedish artist based in Stockholm.

Alona Rodeh

The New Moon in the Old Moon's Arms is a monumental installation on the windows of the Boiler Room, the main exhibition space of the Foundation. The piece explores the history of public and industrial lighting which, from the 18th century on, was developed to fight against people's fear of darkness in order to increase economic activities. It focuses on the light-related evolution of workspaces, addressing the current peak of LED technology usage and the disruption of the night by 24/7 activities.

The image is ambiguous, it disappears in the sky while reminding of gas clouds released during protests or the smoke clouds of the industrial revolution.

Alona Rodeh's work explores the relationships between architecture and power. She often creates large scale installations playing with light, movement and sound, three fundamental elements of her artistic practice. Alona Rodeh is an Israeli artist living in Berlin.

The New Moon in the Old Moon's Arms: performance visit by Alona Rodeh

This event is in english only.
Booking via this link.

L'artiste Alona Rodeh propose de découvrir son installation The New Moon in the Old Moon's Arms, lors d'une visite performée.
